An Even and Flat Body

by Benoit Farcy
Have you ever wondered how do other tyers' flies have such clean and flat bodies? There is only one reason: they plan ahead. If you want your flies to have a flat and even body, you need to have an equally flat and even underbody. Here are a couple of things you can do to improve to look of your flies.

First of all, each turn of thread should be against the one preceding it, covering the entire shank of the hook without leaving any gap between thread wraps. Doing this will also help secure the material onto the hook, thus making the fly more durable.

The second step is that every material you want to tie on before the body (such as the tail, tag, ribs, hackle, etc.) will need to be tied on the entire length of the body. Instead of tying it on and cutting the leftovers, you will cover them with touching turns of thread, ensuring a good transition when the material comes to an end. You can trim off the excess at the head of your flies. The underbody should be nice and flat at this point.

Take your time while tying the body itself, ensuring that every turn of body material touches the last one, just like with the thread. If you are using floss, stretch or such materials, starting at the head of the fly and turning it to the tail and back will ensure that it covers any defect in the underbody. That way to tie a body in is long and takes a lot of material, but will ensure that your fly will be long-lasting, and more importantly, have an appearance you can be proud of!
