Fall Fishing, it's a thing?

by Benoit Farcy

Everybody that has done it before knows what I’m talking about. Cold feet, sore hand, feeling the heat while we are around the fireplace, after a cold and hard day where we’ve been fishing hard, remembering the catch of our life. This is what fall fishing is about!

A lot of people are storing away their equipment by mid-September, as the trout fishing gets closed almost everywhere in Quebec. This is, in my opinion, the very best time to get out, discovering new species and new water. For those who want to try it, here are some tips for you.

Know that it will be cold. This can look dumb, but a lot of people are getting out in October and November dressed under their waders like it’s summer. That’s a mistake, and you will feel it. Add some layer, double your socks, and you can even try those ‘’Hot Shot’’ things under your feet. Being warm will help you to enjoy your day and truly appreciate the memories you will build during this day.

Target the right species. It’s not all species that bite well while the water is cold. The best ones to target are smallmouth bass, salmon (west coast and great lake), steelhead, musky, walleye and pike. If you have none of those species available, know that the yellow perch can also be aggressive during this time of the year.

Target the right spot. Fish can swim, and they will move depending on the season. Your best summer spot may not contain any fish during the fall, as the fish are moving towards their winterizing hole. You will want to intercept them on the travel as they are eating to prepare for winter. They won’t be far from the baitfish!

Discuss. Find people that are fishing during this time of the year and talk with them. Most of those people are passionate about fishing and will love to share their experience with you. You will be able to grab info about the fly, the technique, the water to look for, and you may also find a new friend to come with you to visit new water and fish!

If you adapt to conditions, you should be able to grab the opportunities that you have during the fall close to your home. Most fishermen store their fishing gear too early and then find that the winter is too long. You will be able to fish for a longer period, and to maybe catch the fish of a lifetime!
