Silver fox is a material used by fly tiers for its texture and durability. It mimics natural movements in water, attracting fish.
What for ?
Silver Fox is great for winging longer Atlantic salmon flies, steelhead tube flies and saltwater baitfish streamers.
Characteristic
Silver fox is flexible and has dense underfur. With its black and white shades, it resembles the gray fox but is distinguished by longer hair, allowing for the creation of larger flies. The guard hair measures 2 to 3 inches and can be adapted for tying with tubes or for larger predator flies. The flexibility of the hair is a notable difference compared to the gray fox, thus influencing its use.
How to use it
Silver fox has underfur and guard hairs. The underfur can add a lot of volume to the fly, while the guard hair is aesthetic and supple. To collect the hair, cut close to the skin to use it at full length. Easily separate the two types of hair by holding the tip of the guard hairs in one hand and pulling the underfur in the opposite direction with the other hand. The underfur can also be used to make dubbing brushes.
Tips and advice
To use silver fox optimally, take the right quantities. Too much hair will weigh down the fly and can make it difficult to cast with lighter equipment, while too little will reduce its effectiveness. Ultimately, fly tying is all about balance! Combining it with other materials, such as marabou feathers, enhances the attractiveness of the flies. Marabou feathers add volume and movement, making the fly more appealing to fish.
If this material piques your curiosity, it is available at SHOR Fishing in several colors. The fur is sourced in Canada and is entirely processed in our facilities. It is a hair to discover to bring added value to your fly tying.
