Every year, people are waiting for the bass opener to happen. For the excellent reason that the smallmouth bass, which name in French means "he who fights," is entertaining to fish in both river and lake. An important thing to know is that they like heavy water flow. You'll find them around structures, almost always near currents. Here are five of the most popular bass flies.
Woolly Bugger
This prevalent fly will catch almost any species and is particularly great for bass. It can mimic a crayfish, a leech, a small fish or a big nymph.

Bomber
Aren't those for fishing salmon? Yes, but they're also widely used for catching bass. I doubt anybody could tell you why, but it's highly effective, and you should be in your fly box!

Clouser Minnow
This fly is prevalent mainly since you can use it for fishing in different depths by adapting the dumbbell eyes' size. This simple modification makes it a very versatile pattern.

Lefty Deceiver
It can be tied in virtually any size, and it will imitate almost any species of baitfish that the smallmouth bass is looking for.

Montana Stone
As we all know, fishing with nymphs can be highly effective for catching trout. It also works well for basses, and even the largest specimens will fall for this simple and natural presentation.
